Windows · private beta

Your folders, every day. Any day back.

ChronoBackup is a Windows service: it copies the folders you pick on the schedule you pick, whether or not anyone is signed in, to your own disk or NAS and to your space on this Miniserver. Every run is a snapshot; only what changed travels. Need the photos as they were last Tuesday? Pick the day, choose a folder, done.

It also listens to Claude Code: "back up D:\Photos daily, photos and videos" is a backup job; "give me the photos as of October 20" is a restore.

How it works

Install and pair

The setup installs the service, the app and cbk.exe. In the app, Targets & account → Link with QR pairs the PC with your Miniserver account, and Create cloud target gives you your private space on the ChronoScan backup server. A folder, an external disk or a NAS share works as a target too. Each target shows you its passphrase once: keep it. The backups are encrypted with it, and it is the only way to read them from another PC.

Pick what and when

A job is a folder, a profile (Photos & videos, Documents, Code & projects, Everything), a schedule (daily at 02:00, every 6 hours, weekly…) and how many daily, weekly and monthly snapshots to keep. The first backup starts right away.

Forget about it

The service runs with or without a signed-in user and catches up after the PC was off. Every run is reported here, and a failed or overdue backup gets you an email.

Get any day back

Restore a day lists the days with a copy. Pick one, pick a folder, and the files land there exactly as they were, optionally only a sub folder. Or: cbk restore Photos --day 2026-10-20 --to D:\Restore.

Your backups

Every PC that runs ChronoBackup with your account reports its jobs and runs here. Restores are done on the PC (the app or cbk); this page is the overview.

Download

ChronoBackup is in private beta: the app is free with a Miniserver account; the cloud target is enabled per account. Local targets (your disk, your NAS) work for everyone.

Before you rely on it: write down the passphrase of every target you create (the app shows it once and again under Show passphrase). It encrypts your backups; nobody can recover it for you.

Questions

What is inside?

restic, the open-source backup program: content-defined chunking (only changed blocks are uploaded), deduplication, AES-256 encryption and zstd compression, one immutable snapshot per run. ChronoBackup is the service, the app and the command line around it, plus the catalog on this Miniserver.

Who can read my backups?

Only a PC with the repository passphrase. The passphrase is generated on your PC, stored there protected by Windows (DPAPI), and shown to you once so you can keep it in a password manager. This server never sees it; the cloud target is append-only, so a PC can add snapshots but not delete or overwrite them.

How do I restore on another PC, or after reinstalling Windows?

You need two things: the passphrase of the target (shown when the target was created; Show passphrase in the app shows it again on the original PC) and access to the target: your Miniserver account for the cloud target, or the folder/NAS for a local one. Install ChronoBackup on the new PC, pair it with your account, add the same target with that passphrase (cbk repo add --id cloud --kind rest --url … --password …, or Create cloud target and then set the passphrase) and the days with a copy appear. Without the passphrase the backups cannot be read by anyone, ChronoScan included.

What does "Photos & videos" include?

jpg, jpeg, png, heic, heif, gif, bmp, tif, webp, avif, raw formats (cr2, cr3, nef, arw, dng, orf, raf, rw2), psd, mp4, mov, avi, mkv, m4v, mts, m2ts, 3gp, webm, wmv, mpg and the usual audio formats. Documents takes office files, PDF and text; Code & projects takes everything except build output and dependencies; Everything is everything but OS junk. Custom takes your own extension list.

Does it hydrate OneDrive?

No. Cloud-only placeholders and junctions are skipped; only files that are really on the disk are read.

How much is kept?

Per job: by default 30 daily, 12 weekly and 24 monthly snapshots. Older ones are thinned out after every successful run; data shared by several snapshots is stored once.

And Claude Code?

The setup can register a Claude Code plugin. From then on a sentence like "prepara backup de D:\Fotos, diario, fotos y vídeos" or "dame las fotos tal como estaban el 20 de octubre" becomes the right cbk command, run on your PC.

Which Windows?

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. The setup and the executables are signed by CHRONOSCAN CAPTURE S.L.
